1000baseT - Definition
1000baseT is also known as Gigabit Ethernet. It is an Ethernet LAN that runs at a theoretical transmission speed of 1 Gbps (gigabits per second) and utilizes all four pairs of copper wires in a Category 5 cable. 1000baseT is 100 times faster than Ethernet (10 BasetT) and 10 times faster than 100 BaseT. Gigabit Ethernet can also run over fiber-optic cabling as well. Category 5 cable may not yield adequate performance for Gigabit Ethernet networks and thus Category 5e or Category 6 cable is usually preferred.
