1000baseT - Definition
1000baseT is also known as Gigabit Ethernet. It is an Ethernet LAN that runs at a theoretical transmission speed of 1 Gbps (gigabits per second) and utilizes all four copper wires in a Category 5 cable. 1000baseT is 100 times faster than Ethernet (10 BasetT) and 10 times faster than 100 BaseT. 1000baseT can be used in data centers for server switching, for uplinks from desktop computer switches, or directly to the desktop for broadband applications. Gigabit Ethernet can also run over fiber-optic cabling as well.
