How To Insert Special Characters Into Your Documents

Have you ever wanted to insert trade mark notices or even copyright symbols into your documents? Well Microsoft provided us with a Character Map so we can insert these special characters as well as many others. We can even use the Character Map to insert a happy face symbol to give our documents that Special Pizzazz. This technical brief will show you how to Insert Special Characters into your documents.

For Windows XP

  1. Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then move your mouse over the All Programs icon to display all Start Menu folders.
  3. If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, move your mouse over the Programs folder instead.
  4. Now, move your mouse onto the Accessories menu folder until it expands.
  5. Then move your mouse onto the System Tools menu folder until it expands.
  6. Now Click on the Character Map icon to launch the Character Map program.
  7. In the Font: list, choose a font (type face) that you would like to use.
  8. Now Double click on each character that you would like to insert into your document.
  9. Notice how the Characters to copy: box fills up with all your selected characters.
  10. Then click on the Copy button on the right side of the screen.
  11. This action sends your characters to the clipboard so they can be easily pasted.
  12. You can go ahead and close the Character Map by clicking on the X in the right hand corner.
  13. Now go to your document and click your mouse where you want the characters to appear.
  14. Then click on the word Edit, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
  15. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Paste.
  16. Notice how your Character(s) are now inserted into your document.

For Windows 98 And Windows Millennium

  1. Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then, move your mouse over the Programs menu folder until it expands.
  3. Now move your mouse onto the Accessories menu folder until it expands.
  4. Then move your mouse onto the System Tools menu folder until it expands.
  5. Now Click on the Character Map icon to launch the Character Map program.
