Beginning with Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft embedded Desktop Themes into the operating system. For earlier Windows editions, a separate purchase of Microsoft Plus was required to add Desktop Themes. Then in Windows XP, Microsoft included only a few Desktop Themes to align with its new look and gave us the option to purchase the Microsoft Plus program. Due to the design of Windows XP, older Desktop Themes can be made to work by an advanced user but in actuality these themes are not actively supported. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to Select Desktop Themes on your computer.
For Windows XP
- Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
- Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.
- If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.
- Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.
- Now, Double click on the Display icon to open up the Display Properties window.
- Windows XP will automatically default to the Themes tab allowing you to make adjustments.
- Under the Theme: section, use your mouse to click the down arrow to choose a new Theme.
- Without Microsoft Plus for Window XP, your only choice will be the Windows Classic Theme.
- If you choose More themes online, you will be taken to the Microsoft Plus for Window XP Website.
- So for now, select the Windows Classic Theme and click the OK button to load the theme.
- Windows XP will automatically load the Windows Classic Theme and also exit the Display window.
- Now close the Control Panel to return back to your Windows session.
For Windows 98 And Windows Millennium
- Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
- Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
