DNS (Domain Name System) - Definition

DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name System. It is the system used on the Internet for mapping domain names to the actual numerical addresses of machines on the Internet (IP addresses). Every computer on the Internet has its own number. When you type a web page address into your browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, your computer consults a DNS server to find the actual numerical address for the machine that goes by that name. The hierarchical, distributed database that contains mappings of DNS domain names is consulted, and the user friendly domain name is retrieved and then loaded within your Internet Browser.
