How To Format A Floppy Disk

Floppy disks are vulnerable, can easily damage, and do not last forever. Care should be taken as follows:

For Windows XP

  1. Begin by placing the floppy disk that you want to copy into your floppy drive.
  2. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop until it opens.
  3. Then gently click on the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon just until it becomes highlighted.
  4. Then click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
  5. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on the word Format.
  6. By default, Windows XP will perform a Full Format upon your floppy disk.
  7. If you want to perform a Quick format, then place a check mark next to the Quick Format option.
  8. You can also label your Floppy by typing a name into the Volume label white area.
  9. After making your selections, click on the Start button to initiate the format process.
  10. Windows will warn that Formatting will erase all data on your disk, click the OK button to continue.
  11. A progress indicator bar will travel across the screen for depicting the Format progress.
  12. Windows will notify you when the Format is complete. Click on the OK button to close this window.
  13. Then close all open windows to return back to your Windows session.

For Windows 98 And Windows Millennium

  1. Begin by placing the floppy disk that you want to copy into your floppy drive.
  2. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop until it opens.
  3. Then gently click on the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon just until it becomes highlighted.
  4. Then click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
  5. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on the word Format.
  6. In the Format type area, choose Quick to erase your floppy or Full to completely format it.
  7. This is done by clicking your mouse until a black circle appears next to the Format type.
  8. You can also label your Floppy by typing a name into the Label: white area.
  9. After making your selections, click on the Start button to initiate the format process.
  10. A progress indicator bar will travel across the screen depicting the Format progress.
  11. The Format Results window will appear and display the full properties of your floppy disk.
  12. Then close all open windows to return back to your Windows session.
