Modem - Definition

A Modem is a device within a computer that allows data to be transferred over analog telephone lines. For a modem to work, digital data is either sent or received and then converted into analog data to run through the telephone lines. Depending on the type of modem being used, some can handle data up to speeds of 56 kilobytes per second.
