Name Resolution - Definition
Name Resolution is the method of resolving a computer name to its Internet Protocol (IP) address. The computer can have two names: a NetBIOS name and a Host name. A NetBIOS name is Microsoft’s naming system implemented with LAN Manager, Windows and Windows NT. A Host name is an older naming system primarily used with UNIX systems. There are several files that are used to perform name resolution. These files are searched in different orders depending on which type of name resolution is in use.
