An operating system (OS) is a complex computer program designed so multiple and complicated computer programs can coexist as one physical computer. The operating system has many functions to include hiding details of a computer’s hardware from programmers. However, the most critical function of the operating system is to perform tasks such as sending output to a monitor, maintaining computer files, recognizing keyboard commands, controlling peripheral devices, and much more.
