PDF (Portable Document Format) - Definition

PDF is an abbreviation for Portable Document Format, which is a method of data compression developed by Adobe Systems and used to represent and transmit textual/graphical documents. Ideally, PDF documents can be decoded and read on any computer system, independent of operating systems or hardware compatibility issues. Free Adobe Reader applications are available directly from Adobe Systems. PDF is sometimes used as an alternative to HTML when creating new web pages.
