How To Create a Printer Shortcut On The Desktop

You can print anything you want in a snap by creating and placing a printer shortcut directly onto the Desktop. This can be useful if you have multiple printers assigned to your computer and prefer using a particular printer. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to create a shortcut to your printer and place it on the Desktop so you can simply drag files onto the shortcut and have them print immediately.

For Windows XP

  1. Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.
  3. If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.
  4. Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.
  5. Now, Double click on the Printers and Faxes icon to open up the full listing of printers.
  6. Move your mouse over the Printer you want to use and press the Right Mouse Button (Right-Click).
  7. Now Click on the Create Shortcut menu choice at the bottom of the menu.
  8. Choose Yes when a prompt appears asking if you want to create this shortcut on the Desktop.
  9. A shortcut to this printer will now be placed onto the Desktop for you.
  10. Now close the open listing of Printers and Faxes window to return back to your Windows session.
  11. You can now drag any file you like onto this printer shortcut to have it print immediately.

For Windows 98 And Windows Millennium

  1. Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double click on the Printers icon to open up the full listing of printers.
  4. Move your mouse over the Printer you want to use and press the Right Mouse Button (Right-Click).
  5. Now Click on the Create Shortcut menu choice at the bottom of the menu.
  6. Choose Yes when a prompt appears asking if you want to create this shortcut on the Desktop.
  7. A shortcut to this printer will now be placed onto the Desktop for you.
  8. Now close the open listing of printers window to return back to your Windows session.
