Protocol - Definition
Protocol is a common set of rules and signals that network computers use to communicate. Protocols may be implemented by hardware, software, or a combination of the two. At the lowest level, a protocol defines the behavior of a hardware connection. One of the most popular protocols for Local Area Networks (LANs) is called Ethernet. Another popular LAN protocol for PCs is the IBM token ring network.
