QuickTime - Definition
QuickTime is a file compression format developed by Apple Computers starting in late 1991 and used to encode audiovisual data. The application needed to decode and play QuickTime files is available free from Apple’s website. Ideally, QuickTime files can be played on any computer, independent of operating system or hardware compatibility issues. Since 2002, QuickTime has been compatible with—indeed, the basis of—MPEG-4 standard video compression.
