How To Enable Or Disable The Yellow Speaker In The System Tray

If a sound card installed in your system, Windows will display a little yellow speaker icon into the system tray located at the lower right hand corner of the screen. In short, this yellow speaker icon allows you to make adjustments to your audio card’s various volume controls when you double click on it. But sometimes this yellow speaker disappears, when one inadvertently disables it or you may have a particular situation where you actually want it to be disabled so that you can increase your system resources. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to enable or disable the little yellow speaker icon in the system tray.

For Windows XP

  1. Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.
  3. If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.
  4. Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.
  5. Now, Double click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon until it opens for you.
  6. This will bring up the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window.
  7. At the center of the screen is a white box next to Place volume icon in the taskbar.
  8. To enable the speaker icon, place a check mark into the white box with your mouse.
  9. To disable the speaker icon, simply remove the check mark from the white box.
  10. Then click on the OK button to close the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties Window.
  11. And then close the Control Panel to return back to your Windows session.

For Windows 98 And Windows Millennium

  1. Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. For Windows 98, double click on the Sounds and Multimedia icon until it opens for you.
  4. For Windows Millennium, double click on the Multimedia icon until it opens for you.
  5. This will bring up the Sounds and Multimedia Properties window.
  6. At the lower left corner of the screen is a white box next to Show volume control on the taskbar.
  7. To enable the yellow speaker icon, place a check mark into the white box with your mouse.
  8. To disable the yellow speaker icon, simply remove the check mark from the white box.
  9. Then click on the OK button to close the Multimedia Properties Window.
  10. And then close the Control Panel to return back to your Windows session.
