XON/XOFF - Definition

XON/XOFF refers to control commands used when two devices handshake using a modem connection. X stands for transmitter, which is frequently referred to as Software Flow Control. Typically the receiver will send an XOFF character when it can’t take any more data such as when it may need more time to process something. When the receiver can accept more data, it will send an XON character to the transmitter.
